2018 SUMMER CIVIC ENSEMBLE
Coached by Steven K. Leonard

The Traverse Symphony Civic Ensembles educational program is offering an 8­week summer chamber orchestra experience for adults and high school students. Summer Civic will explore works for chamber orchestra to be performed without a conductor. Rehearsals will be coached by Steven K. Leonard, Associate Concertmaster of the TSO and Director of the Civic Chamber Music Program.

Summer Civic Ensemble will rehearse Tuesdays from 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm starting June 12­ at Central United Methodist Church (222 Cass Street, Traverse City). There will be a performance on Tuesday, August 7, on the date of the last rehearsal. Please note, there will be no rehearsal on July 3, during Cherry Festival.

CIVIC SINFONIA STRINGS
Directed by Lynne Tobin

Sinfonia is an advanced string orchestra open to instrumentalists of violin, viola, cello, and bass. Members must possess solid technical and music reading skills. Typical members will have studied a minimum of three years, have a private instructor and participate in performances at school, church or other community ensembles. The semester ends with a free concert open to the public. If you are looking to join in winter semester, please contact the Symphony office directly by e-mail or by phone at 231-947-7120. Sinfonia rehearses Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30 pm at Central United Methodist Church (222 Cass Street, Traverse City). The first rehearsal for the Winter 2018 term will be Tuesday, January 16. Click here for the full Sinfonia rehearsal schedule. Any changes to this schedule, including weather-related rehearsal cancellations, will be posted on this website. Please be advised we have a new Snow Day Cancellation Policy: if TCAPS schools are closed due to weather, Civic members will also be sent an email at mid-day notifying them of rehearsal status.

CIVIC PRELUDE STRINGS
Directed by Lynne Tobin

Prelude Strings members should have at least one year of instruction and have been introduced to note-reading prior to joining. This ensemble may also be a great entry point for adult beginners or those who have been away from their instruments for a number of years. If you are looking to join in winter semester, please contact the Symphony office directly by e-mail or by phone at 231-947-7120. See below for registration information.

Prelude rehearses Tuesdays from 5:45-6:45 pm at Central United Methodist Church (222 Cass Street, Traverse City). CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM
Coached by Steven K. Leonard

The Chamber Music Program is open to all Prelude and Sinfonia members as well as other interested amateur string musicians. Each musician will rehearse and be coached by TSO Associate Concertmaster Steven K. Leonard in a small group before or after the regular Civic rehearsal. The semester finishes with an informal chamber music concert.

Audition Information

Fall 2018 Auditions for both Prelude and Sinfonia Ensembles will be held in early September 2018. Time and locaation TBD. Please call the Symphony office at 231-947-7120 or e-mail for more information, or to schedule an audition. Please prepare a scale and solo that demonstrates your highest level of playing.

Returning members do not need to audition unless interested in moving from Prelude Strings to Sinfonia Strings, second violin to first violins within the same section, or auditioning for a principal section chair.

Tuition

  • Civic Sinfonia Strings and Civic Prelude Strings tuition: $125/semester
  • Chamber music program tuition: $50/semester

Tuition fees cover part of the costs of facility rental, purchasing music, professional coaching and other Civic-related costs.

Scholarships

A limited number of partial scholarships are available to students who apply and demonstrate a financial need to assist with tuition for Prelude and Sinfonia Strings. To apply for a scholarship, please fill out the application form and e-mail or print and mail to 300 E. Front Street, Ste. 230, Traverse City, MI 49684.
