George Bliss

Principal Bass Trombone

George Bliss has been actively playing and performing on trombone, euphonium and tuba for over 57 years. 2015-16 marks his 35th season as principal bass trombone with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra. George completed studies in music education at Heidelberg College.

Day time finds him employed as a senior marketing consultant with Midwestern Broadcasting Company in Traverse City. Musical adventures include performing with the TSO Brass Quintet and teaching low brass instruments to area students at Pembrook Low Brass Studio, his private instruction studio. George is often asked to adjudicate for local solo and ensemble contests and jazz clinics.

He enjoys freelancing as a trombone and bass trombonist throughout the Midwest. Performances with notables such as Bob Hope, Johnnie Mathis, Ann Murray, The Temptations, Frankie Valie, Natalie Cole, Linda Ronstadt, Aaron Neville, Don Rickles, Jerry Lewis, Gladys Knight, Frank Sinatra Jr. and many others have highlighted an avocation that spans over 50 years.

George’s charter memberships include Bass Trombonist with the Dave Sporny Big Band, The Reef Petroleum Big Band, The Bay Area Big Band, and several small special occasion bands.

George is heavily involved with the Bay Area Music Foundation, a 501 C-3 non profit organization, whose mission is “changing children lives with music.” Performances and clinics in schools throughout the region benefit middle school and high school musicians particularly in the area of jazz education.

George enjoys traveling the country with his wife Carol and their three dachshunds in their recently restored vintage 1965 Airstream travel trailer.
