First Nights: Five musical premieres

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be at the premier of some of the most influential musical works? In this class we will take a deeper look at five musical works and premiers that impacted the direction music would take for years to come. We will discuss the historical context and culture around these premiers and look at primary and secondary sources to give a broader understanding of the environment that these works came from.

We have all heard Beethoven’s music, but what do we know about the man? This class will cover Ludwig van Beethoven the person, as well as the music. We will listen to and discuss several different works by Beethoven throughout his life. Join us to learn what to listen for and what makes the music of Beethoven so great!

The Many Musics of Mozart: Opera, Symphonies, and The Requiem

How did Mozart have so many musical ideas? And why are so many of them so good? Let’s explore Mozart’s life and music to identify what makes his music stand the test of time.

We will listen to and discuss several different works by Mozart over the course of 4 weeks.
